섬의 새들은 뭐가 즐거운지 지지배배 울어댔다. 바다에 닿아 부서진 빛이 물 위에서 아른거렸고, 소금기를 품은 바람이 묵직하게 흩날렸다. 길가의 감귤 나무는 아직 여물지 않아 풋내가 났고, 그 나무들 뒤로 여고생들의 웃음소리가 영글어가고 있었다. 해녀들이 내린 부두에서 물파래 냄새가 났다.
해가 가는방향으로 걸은 탓에 자꾸 뒤를 돌아보게 됐다. 뒤에선 내가 놓치고 온 풍경들이 나를 기다리고 있었다. 눈이 부셔 급히 나아가지 못하고 천천히 걸었다. 반대편에서 오던 올레꾼에게 얼마나 걸리셨냐 물었더니, 빨리 갈 필요가 없다고 말해주었다.
코스의 절반을 넘길쯤 카메라 배터리가 다 돼 교체했다. 잠깐 큰길로 나와 편의점에 들러 물을 두 병 샀고, 담배 한대와 커피 한잔으로 시간을 조금 보냈다.
두 발이 강정에 닿았을 때 하늘이 어두워져 스산했다. 조용한 섬마을 어귀엔 아직 투쟁의 상처가 남아있었다. 강정천의 물은 바다를 밀어내려는 마냥 굽이쳐 흘렀다. 바다는 돌과 강 사이에서 부서져 서로의 경계를 알 수 없었다. 먼 바다에 회색 벽이 서있었다. 구럼비 바위가 있던 자리, 그 안쪽 부두에 군함 한척이 정박해있었다. 해군기지 옆으로 크루즈 정착장이 올라가고 있었다. 강정 바다는 계속 상처가 나고 있었고, 섬의 남쪽 바다는 낫지 않을 그 상처를 무던히 씻겨주고 있었다.
강정 해안가를 걷고나면 코스가 거의 다 끝난다. 코스 마지막 스탬프를 찍는 곳은 길가의 작은 슈퍼인데, 스탬프 상자 옆에 앉아있던 중국인 관광객이 내가 찍는 걸 보고 신기했는지 이것저것 물었고, 서로 안되는 영어로 재잘거리다가 그 중국인 관광객 수첩에 스탬프를 찍어주었다. 짜이찌엔!
올레길을 걸으면서 만난 사람들 중에 코스 완주를 목표로 하는 사람은 많지 않았다. 중무장한 올레꾼 두 명 정도. 지나가면 인사하고 쉴때면 서로 여행이야기로 수다를 떨었다. 경쟁적으로 올레길을 대하지 않는 사람들의 인식이 좋았다
다섯 시간여를 걸으면서, 섬은 오감을 다 열어도 다 받아들이지 못할만큼 자신만만했다. 내 단어들은 이 생경한 섬을 표현하지 못한다. 제주를 글로 옮기기에 내 문장들은 한참 부족하다. 먼 햇살이 긴 그림자를 만들었다.
